Have you ever noticed that little village just beyond the western city limits of Rostock? Nestled in the quiet countryside, right where the farmland dips toward the Warnow River, sits Groβ Schwaβ. While many might breeze past it on their way to the coast, Groβ Schwaβ holds whispers of a fascinating past, one that stretches back centuries. The story of Groβ Schwaβ is a story of transformation, one that unfolds in layers, like the rich history of the town itself.

The village first saw the light of day in 1319, mentioned as “Zwerze” in the tax records of the Neukloster Sonnenkamp Monastery. Back then, it was a humble collection of ten small farms, each working the land, each contributing to the community. But Groβ Schwaβ’s quiet existence would be disrupted less than a decade later.

In 1328, Henneke and Heinrich von Bϋlow, two powerful figures of the time, made a life-altering decision for the village. They sold Groβ Schwaβ to the two hospitals in Rostock: the St. George Hospital and the St. Spirit Hospital. This act, though it might seem ordinary to us today, was a pivotal moment. It signified a shift in the village’s fate, a tie to the bustling Hansa city of Rostock.

The centuries that followed saw a constant ebb and flow of change. Groβ Schwaβ became a vital link between the rural and urban regions, its existence interwoven with the events that shaped Rostock. As the years passed, the village witnessed the rise of new industries, the construction of a train station along the Wismar-Rostock line, and a steady growth in its population. Today, Groβ Schwaβ boasts a modern face with its impressive industrial zone and charming single-family homes.

Yet, despite its modern appearance, the village keeps its ancient heart beating strong. It’s best seen during the yearly Easter celebrations. Villagers gather around the giant bonfire, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames, a timeless tradition that echoes through history and connects the present with the long-forgotten past.

Groβ Schwaβ, though small, offers a captivating glimpse into the history of Rostock, a reminder of the rural heart that beats within the city’s bustling rhythm. It is a place where the past and present coexist, interwoven with the timeless tapestry of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. So, when you explore the region around Rostock, remember to turn your attention toward the quieter side of the city, to experience the quiet charm of Groβ Schwaβ.
