Hidden within Denpasar, Griya Tegal Denpasar whispers tales of devotion and resilience. Griya Tegal Denpasar played a pivotal role in the Puputan Badung, a tragic yet heroic act of defiance against Dutch colonial forces in 1906. Two priests from Griya Tegal, bound by a sacred oath, stood with the King of Badung. They pledged their loyalty, even if it meant sacrificing their lives. This “Bisama” oath connected their lineages. It ensured future generations would stand together, sharing both joys and sorrows. Griya Telaga Tegal and Griya Beji Tegal were elevated to the status of Bagawanta Puri, royal priests. This reinforced their bond with the kingdom. The king, flanked by his Bagawanta Puri, the royal army, and loyal subjects, faced the Dutch forces. This fulfilled his duty as a Ksatria Utama, a true warrior, defending his kingdom. The legacy of Griya Tegal Denpasar continues through the generations. Descendants of the priests established various Griyas, including Griya Taman Sari Tegal, Griya Carik Tegal, Griya Sari Tegal, Griya Belaluan, and Griya Yang Batu. Each Griya carries forward the traditions and spiritual practices of Griya Tegal Denpasar. They serve as a testament to their unwavering devotion and commitment to Balinese Hinduism.
