What would you say if I told you this park was once an oasis for Dallas’s African American community during a time of segregation? Griggs Park, a serene escape in the heart of Uptown Dallas, holds more than just benches and playgrounds. It carries with it a legacy of resilience, education, and hope. This 8-acre park, established in 1915, was originally known as Hall Street Negro Park. It was one of the only spaces where African Americans could gather for leisure and recreation. But the story of Griggs Park is deeply intertwined with the remarkable life of Reverend Allen R. Griggs. Born into slavery in 1850, Griggs rose to become a beacon of empowerment for the African American community. He founded the first high school for African Americans in Dallas in 1878, 14 years before a public equivalent existed. His dedication to education didn’t stop there – he established four black colleges, two seminaries, an academy, and over 500 institutions dedicated to learning and faith. Griggs was also a pioneer in journalism, creating and publishing the first African American newspaper in Texas in 1878. His contributions were monumental, and in 1924, this park was renamed in his honor, a testament to his enduring legacy. Today, Griggs Park stands as a symbol of how far we’ve come as a society while reminding us of the struggles that paved the way for a more inclusive future. As you enjoy the peace and beauty of Griggs Park, remember the man who lent his name to it. Remember the history that unfolded on these very grounds. And carry that spirit of progress with you as you continue your journey.
