How accessible is an airport? Griffith-Merrillville Airport answers that question with a resounding “Very!” You see, this airport, nestled just two miles east of Griffith in Lake County, Indiana, prides itself on ease of access. Griffith-Merrillville Airport opened its gates to the public in January 1962. Since then, it has become an important hub for general aviation and air taxi services, boasting a runway of 4,900 by 75 feet. This runway is no stranger to advanced navigation systems, equipped with VOR/DME and GPS instrument approaches. Griffith-Merrillville Airport is not just about takeoffs and landings. It houses a bustling ecosystem of aviation-related services. A fixed-base operator, a flight school, and a full-service maintenance facility all call this airport home. And for those with a need for speed, there’s even a company offering custom engine overhauls! Interestingly, until December 2023, Griffith-Merrillville Airport was privately owned by Griffith Aviation, Inc. However, the reins were passed to the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority in a deal worth $1.8 million. This transition marked a new chapter for the airport.
