Four winged lions support this magnificent bowl. This is the Griffin Tazza. It is also known as the Lion Vase. It stands as a centrepiece in Regent’s Park. Imagine this stunning sculpture in front of you.

The Griffin Tazza dates back to the 1860s. Austin and Seeley designed this circular stone planter. They crafted it from artificial stone. The word “tazza” simply means “vase”.

William Andrews Nesfield installed it in 1863. He was the designer of the Italian Gardens. The Griffin Tazza became the gardens’ focal point.

You are standing in Avenue Gardens. This is where you will find the Griffin Tazza. Avenue Gardens is south of the Broad Walk. The area was originally laid out by John Nash.

The Griffin Tazza is one of about 30 stone vases here. However, it is easily the most impressive.

In the mid-1990s the vase was restored. This ensured its beauty for future generations.

Regent’s Park itself has an interesting history. Henry VIII used it as a royal hunting ground. It was known as Marylebone Park until 1646. John Nash transformed it into the park we see today. He envisioned gardens, lakes and residential terraces.

The Griffin Tazza is a highlight of Regent’s Park. It is a testament to Victorian artistry. It is one of London’s most enjoyable formal gardens.
