Had Edvard Grieg known his Leipzig legacy would reside on the first floor of a music publisher’s building, he might have chuckled. Here at the Grieg-Begegnungsstätte, housed within the former C.F. Peters publishing house on Talstrasse 10, we encounter more than just a museum. We step into a preserved piece of Grieg’s Leipzig life. The Grieg-Begegnungsstätte, opened in 2005, isn’t simply a collection of artifacts. It’s a resurrection of a space where Grieg truly lived and breathed music. This building wasn’t just a business address. It was a home away from home, a place of friendship and creative exchange. Grieg often stayed for weeks, sometimes even months, in Leipzig during concert season. He’d find respite and camaraderie at Talstrasse 10, hosted by the publishers Max Abraham and Henri Hinrichsen. He even had his own guest apartment in the attic. Imagine Grieg, young and ambitious, arriving in Leipzig in 1858 as a 15-year-old conservatory student. Years later, he would return to this very building, now a celebrated composer, to share his newest works with Max Abraham in the music salon. This very salon, painstakingly restored with its original wood paneling and replica period carpeting, forms the heart of the Grieg-Begegnungsstätte. While the attic rooms where Grieg stayed haven’t survived, the music salon where he shared his musical soul has. The Grieg-Begegnungsstätte is more than a museum. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of music and friendship, a place where the echoes of Grieg’s melodies still resonate within these walls. The society, Grieg-Begegnungsstätte Leipzig e.V., founded in 1998, ensures that Grieg’s Leipzig story continues to be told, through concerts and events held regularly in this special space.
