Gribblehirst Park wasn’t always the green space we see today. Long ago, this land was a swamp called Cabbage Tree Swamp. The original name was Ngā Anawai. This name refers to water-filled lava-flow caves. Māori used the swamp for food and materials.
Later, European settlers called it Cabbage Tree Swamp. That was because of the many cabbage trees lining the area. Sandringham, especially near the swamp, often flooded. A stone bridge called Gribble’s Bridge helped people bypass the flooded areas.
Fast forward to the 1920s. The Gribble and Hirst families donated their estate to the Mt Albert Borough Council. That land became Gribblehirst Park. The park officially opened on March 28, 1931.
Today, Gribblehirst Park spans 5.9 hectares. It has sports fields and forested areas. Cabbage Tree Swamp Drive cuts through it. Explore the rose garden near Aroha Avenue. Discover the lava rock forest. This pristine area is not visible to the outside.
Gribblehirst Park is home to the Gribblehirst Community Hub. It is a community centre for the area. Auckland Central Community Shed is also located here. It is a place where locals can fix broken things and share skills. The Eden Rugby Football Club also calls this park home.
The park has a well-used rugby field. It has a hybrid surface for more wear. There is a playground with a flying fox and a sky swing for teenagers. A half-basketball court is nearby. A community library and a BBQ are available.
The former bowling club is now the Gribblehirst Community Hub. Tumeke Cycle Space is also located there. It is a space for community bike repair. There is also a garden developed by Morningside Urban Market Garden. A flat area is used for pétanque.
The park has a circular seating area. Information about the park was on the table’s surface. However, it is now in poor repair. A formal 1950s-style rose garden can be found. New toilets with an art feature have been installed. New seats and improved paths are underway.
