Gregorio Perfecto High School

Established in 1958, Gregorio Perfecto High School stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit. Originally an annex of Florentino Torres High School, it blossomed into its own entity due to the burgeoning student population. Gregorio Perfecto High School started as the Ismar Annex. Imagine the bustling hallways of Florentino Torres in 1947, with Principal Pablo Reyes recognizing the need for a separate school. The Ismar Annex, overflowing with 1,375 students and 45 teachers, was ready to stand on its own. This need became even more urgent in 1951 when the mother school’s population exploded to over 7,000 students. Finally, on June 16, 1958, Ismar Annex achieved independence, becoming Ismar High School. Located on Juan Luna Street, with an annex on the corner of Tapuri and Yangco, the school thrived under the leadership of Principal Fabian Bugayong. Later that year, on September 25th, Mayor Arsenio H. Lacson honored Supreme Court Associate Justice Gregorio Perfecto by renaming the school after him. Perfecto, a signatory of the 1935 Constitution and a former representative of Tondo in Congress, became the school’s namesake. Gregorio Perfecto High School’s journey has not been without its challenges. The building, constructed in Ricafort Street in 1964, suffered earthquake damage in 1969 and again in 1990. The 1990 earthquake necessitated a complete reconstruction, lasting three years. During this time, classes continued in various locations: the Tondo Sports Complex, a vacant lot on Ricafort Street with makeshift rooms, and Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School. Even after restoration in 1993, a fire in 1996 destroyed the third floor, requiring further rebuilding. More recently, in 2014, the entire school underwent another reconstruction due to the building’s critical condition. Students attended classes at Gen. Maximino Hizon Elementary School and Gen. Gregorio del Pilar Elementary School. A fire at the latter school in 2015 added another layer of complexity to the school’s history. Through these trials, Gregorio Perfecto High School has persevered, embodying the strength and determination of its community. The school’s spirit shines through its achievements, including its partnership with De La Salle University and the Operation Big Brother program. With a rich history of overcoming adversity and a commitment to education, Gregorio Perfecto High School continues to shape the future of its students and the Tondo community.
