In the heart of Melbourne’s northern suburbs lies Greenvale. It’s a place where history whispers through the leaves of ancient trees and the echoes of the past linger in the air. Greenvale wasn’t always the bustling suburb it is today. The area takes its name from a humble farm, also called “Greenvale,” owned by John McKerchar back in the 19th century. The original Greenvale Post Office opened in 1871, serving a sparse rural community. It closed in 1969, only to reopen in 1996 as the area blossomed into a suburb. Greenvale experienced a period of significant growth in the 1980s. This expansion led to the development of shopping centers, schools, and community facilities. One of the most intriguing aspects of Greenvale’s history is the Greenvale Sanatorium. Built in 1905, this facility was initially designed to treat tuberculosis patients, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Its isolated location was chosen to protect the general public from the disease. Over time, the sanatorium evolved. A new brick hospital, the Percy Everett Building, was added in 1940. The older weatherboard structures were demolished in 1973. With advancements in tuberculosis treatment, the site transitioned into an aged care facility in 1956, finally closing its doors in 1998. The land was later incorporated into Woodlands Historic Park. Today, Greenvale boasts a blend of old and new, with grand homes in the older sections earning it the nickname “The Toorak of the North.” Beyond its residential areas, Greenvale is home to Living Legends. This organization provides a peaceful retirement for champion racehorses within the beautiful Woodlands Historic Park. Greenvale also features the Greenvale Reservoir, built in 1973, and several housing estates like Greenvale Lakes and Aspect Greenvale, which offer modern living near the reservoir and stunning city views.
