Greenstone United Methodist Church. A name that whispers history. This magnificent building stands before you a testament to faith and resilience.

Built in 1882 as part of the planned town of Pullman it was envisioned by George Pullman as a unifying space for all denominations. Pullman a man with Universalist roots saw this church as a place of common worship a place for all to unite. However reality proved different. Each group preferred their own traditions their own languages their own pastors.

For over two years Greenstone United Methodist Church sat empty. The rent was simply too high. $300 a month for the church and an additional $65 for the parsonage. Smaller groups met in rented spaces in the Market Hall the Arcade or the Casino buildings. The high cost was deemed excessive. Finally the rent was lowered.

The Presbyterians became the first tenants leasing the building by 1887. They worshipped here until 1905. Then a Methodist congregation bought the building. It has been in their care ever since. It’s a remarkable story of adaptation and perseverance.

The church itself is stunning. Designed by Solon S Beman it boasts a unique facade of green stone quarried in Pennsylvania. The sanctuary largely unchanged since the 1880s is a visual masterpiece. Over 90% of the stained glass windows are original. The cherrywood altar and pews are original as well. The manual tracker pipe organ adds to the atmosphere. It’s an exceptional example of architectural preservation.

In 2002 Greenstone United Methodist Church merged with two predominantly Black congregations. This merger strengthened its commitment to community service. Today the church serves as a vital community center. It hosts events ranging from concerts and farmers markets to community aid and environmental initiatives. It even partners with Pullman Tech Workshop a trades school dedicated to preserving historic building techniques.

Greenstone United Methodist Church’s history is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s a story of changing times shifting demographics and a steadfast commitment to faith community and preservation. It’s a story worth remembering a story woven into the very stones of this remarkable building. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and legacy.
