Beneath the clear Johannesburg sky, nestled between Greenside and Emmarentia, stands the Greenside Mosque, also known as Masjid Ur Rahma. It’s a place where modern architecture meets traditional Islamic design. The Greenside Mosque boasts the classic dome and minaret structure. Within its walls, it houses a Madressah and an Islamic Library. The Greenside Mosque isn’t just a place for Namaaz. It’s a vibrant hub woven into the fabric of the community. Recently, the Greenside Mosque opened its doors to people of all faiths. This open day aimed to foster understanding and bridge cultural gaps. Interestingly, the Greenside Mosque is sometimes referred to as the “Silent Mosque”. Respecting the diverse religious landscape of the neighbourhood, the Adhaan isn’t broadcast loudly. Many residents opt for “Bilal” radio, a service bringing lectures and Adhaan directly into their homes. This service is common in many mosques across Johannesburg. The Greenside Mosque has a strong family atmosphere. It’s a place where connections flourish and greetings are exchanged warmly. Many attendees walk to the Greenside Mosque, emphasizing its role as a local gathering point. The community is a mix of local Indian Muslims, many originally from Mayfair and Lenasia. There’s also a noticeable presence of people from Turkey, Malawi, and Pakistan, adding to the rich tapestry of cultures at the Greenside Mosque.
