Lost in the labyrinth of Greenhills Shopping Center you stumble upon a beacon of serenity. Greenhills Masjid stands as a testament to faith amidst the bustling commerce. It is a place where the rhythmic call to prayer blends seamlessly with the everyday hum of the mall.
Greenhills Masjid is more than just a prayer room. It’s a vital part of the Greenhills community. Initially Muslim tenants prayed in their cramped stalls. In 1992 Ortigas and Company granted their request for a dedicated space. This first prayer area was small and dimly lit. It was merely a service alley.
However the need for a larger space became apparent. The Greenhills Muslim Traders Association Inc. GMTA grew in size. In 2004 a new Greenhills Masjid opened. It was a fully air-conditioned 400 to 500 square meter musalla. A washing area and a Halal-certified restaurant were added. This mosque could accommodate up to 2000 worshippers. The prayer hall alone held 400. For many years it was the only air-conditioned mosque within a shopping mall in the Philippines.
The Greenhills Masjid wasn’t built without controversy. Some residents worried it would attract trouble and lower property values. They even threatened to boycott Greenhills. But Ortigas and Company assured them that the Muslim traders were honest and hardworking members of the community. The project went ahead. It is now a symbol of religious tolerance. The Masjid opened in 2005. Opposition eventually faded.
In 2018 the Greenhills Masjid moved again. It relocated to a new 1000 square meter center. This time it was on the second floor of the McKinley Building. The story of Greenhills Masjid is a beautiful one. It highlights faith community and resilience. It shows how even amidst the clamor of a shopping mall a place of quiet contemplation can thrive. As you leave Greenhills Masjid remember its unique place in the heart of the city.
