The wind whistles through the new houses of Greendykes, a place that has seen its fair share of change. Now, a modern haven with green spaces, this wasn’t always the case. Greendykes was a council development, mostly low-rise flats, built in the 1960s. The area was designed to house families in need, but it lacked the charm and amenities of other parts of Edinburgh.

The 1990s were a turbulent time for Greendykes. The flats became associated with social issues, with some areas experiencing deprivation and violence. A particularly intense period came in 1994 when hundreds of youths clashed with police. This riot, ignited by the arrest of a young man, lasted 48 hours and left six officers injured.

Despite these struggles, Greendykes was also home to a bustling community. Many residents had strong ties to the area. Even back then, there was a sense of community spirit. The low-rise flats were eventually demolished and replaced with more modern, family-friendly housing. Today, Greendykes is a much less deprived area, with green spaces and a vibrant atmosphere.

Greendykes has come a long way since the 1990s. The community is resilient, and their story is one of perseverance. So, take a walk through the neighborhood and see the transformation for yourself. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the people who call Greendykes home.
