A hidden gem. That’s Greenbush Bay. Nestled in West Auckland Greenbush Bay boasts a rich history. Long before European settlers arrived Greenbush Bay held significance for Maori. It was once known as Karaka Bay. This name was changed to avoid confusion with other similarly named bays. The area served as a crucial portage. This linked the Waitemata and Manukau harbours. At the bay’s western edge stood a large Maori pa. This was located at Motukaraka now known as Karaka Park. Greenbush Bay’s beach is part of a scenic coastal walk. This walk leads through the beautiful Karaka Park. Today Greenbush Bay is a vibrant community. It has a significant population. It is also home to BirdCare Aotearoa. This is New Zealand’s largest wild bird hospital and rescue center. BirdCare Aotearoa treats thousands of injured or sick birds annually. The sheer number of birds cared for highlights the importance of conservation. Greenbush Bay offers a fascinating blend of history and modern life. It demonstrates New Zealand’s commitment to wildlife. It’s a place where the past and present coexist beautifully. It’s a place I hope you will remember long after leaving Greenbush Bay.
