Bill McClure designed and built Green Valley Raceway on his dairy farm. The track officially opened in 1960. It quickly became a motorsports mecca. In its first full season in 1961 it drew 125000 spectators.
Originally, Green Valley Raceway featured a 1.6-mile road course. That start-finish straight served as a drag strip. In 1966, the course was updated to 2.1 miles. Green Valley hosted Trans-Am Series races and SCCA events. Even a Can-Am race thrilled fans in 1984. The drag strip roared with NHRA and AHRA sanctioned events.
But Green Valley Raceway wasn’t just about professional racing. It was also a testing ground. In 1974, Evel Knievel himself used the circuit. He used it for one of his daring stunt performances.
The renowned racing duo Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby made history here. They debuted the iconic Mustang GT 350 at Green Valley Raceway in 1965. That event cemented the track’s place in motorsports history.
Time waits for no one. The original Green Valley Raceway is gone. Housing developments stand where racers once sped. Green Valley Elementary School sits on a portion of the old track. The school even uses a piece of the demolished track for its perfect attendance trophy.
