The Green Science Building officially opened in July 2020. Soon after, it earned LEED Gold status from the U.S. Green Building Council. This recognition highlights the building’s environmentally conscious design and construction.
Dr. Matthew Goeckner called the Green Science Building an absolutely gorgeous space. It provides ample room for teaching labs. Moreover, it allows the entire physics department to be under one roof. Before, they were scattered across eight buildings.
The Green Science Building houses the Department of Physics. It also has classrooms, offices, teaching and research labs. Some activities of the William B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences also take place here. You’ll find two lecture halls and an open courtyard too. Green spaces and seating areas dot the courtyard.
Dr. Bruce Novak advocated for the Green Science Building. He noted the L-shaped design lets students see science in action. They can observe teaching labs on the ground floor. Novak praised the architectural firm Stantec and the construction firm Linbeck. He said they brought it all together beautifully.
The basement of the Green Science Building sits close to bedrock. This makes it ideal for certain physics research. Experiments needing minimal vibrations can occur here. It’s also perfect for those requiring the lowest temperature possible. A dark environment for laser spectroscopy is available too.
The Green Science Building incorporates regionally sourced materials. These materials significantly reduce water consumption. Energy-efficient equipment and lighting help minimize energy use. Impressively, about 75% of demolition and construction waste was recycled. This diverted it from landfills. Nearly a quarter of the building materials contain recycled content. This includes concrete, steel, framing, drywall, and flooring.
The Green Science Building’s roof reflects sunlight. Ninety percent of the surrounding hardscape also reflects sunlight. This helps mitigate the heat island effect common in urban areas. The building was designed to reduce energy for lighting and cooling. The landscape and irrigation system were arranged to cut water usage by over 50%.
Gary Cocke stated that the Green Science Building is the eighth LEED-certified building at UT Dallas. It brings the university’s LEED-certified square footage to nearly 1.3 million. The university’s commitment to sustainability is a point of pride for the entire campus community.
