Deep in Melbourne’s western suburbs, nestled within Keilor Downs, lies the expansive Green Gully Reserve. This isn’t just any reserve. It’s a place steeped in history, a testament to community spirit, and a haven for sports and recreation. Green Gully Reserve is large enough to house seven soccer grounds, a few cricket ovals, and still have ample space for sprawling parklands. Originally established in 1955 as the Ajax Soccer Club by Maltese immigrants, the club adopted the green and white colors of the Maltese Floriana club. When the club relocated to its current home at Green Gully Reserve in 1966, it was renamed Green Gully SC. The “Ajax” was dropped in 1982, solidifying the club’s identity with its new home. This year, Green Gully SC celebrates a rich 70-year history, a testament to the enduring legacy of the “mighty Gully Cavaliers.” The reserve isn’t just about soccer. It’s a vibrant hub for the community, with playgrounds featuring towers, tunnels, slides, swings, and charming native bird sculptures. There are picnic areas, barbecues, and plenty of space for families to spread out and enjoy the fresh air. Green Gully Reserve is more than just a recreational space. It’s a symbol of sustainability. A remarkable stormwater harvesting project, completed in 2013 as part of the $8.4 million Brimbank Alternative Water Supply Project, helps irrigate the reserve. Water from two nearby stormwater drains is captured in a holding pond with a capacity of 3 million liters. This water is treated and used for irrigation, saving over 40 million liters of water annually, the equivalent of 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This project provides almost three-quarters of the reserve’s irrigation needs, keeping the grounds lush and green. The reserve has even hosted significant sporting events. In 2016, a crowd of 876 gathered to witness the FFA Cup clash between Green Gully and the Central Coast Mariners. Whether you’re a sports enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Green Gully Reserve offers something for everyone. It’s a vibrant testament to community, sustainability, and the power of sport.
