Opened in May 2012, the Green Energy Hall stands as a testament to innovation. This building isn’t just a structure. It’s a living, breathing experiment in sustainable architecture. The Green Energy Hall arose from a partnership between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Italian Ministry of the Environment. This collaboration, formalized in 2007, aimed to create a hub for researching and showcasing low-carbon technologies. The Green Energy Hall’s design, a compact form enveloping a central courtyard, optimizes energy use. The courtyard, capped with a retractable skylight, acts as a heat accumulator in winter. It transforms into a natural chimney in summer, venting warm air. Inside, the building houses laboratories, meeting rooms, and classrooms across its first two floors. The third floor holds two model apartments. These apartments, a two-room and a three-room flat, serve as testing grounds for energy-efficient residential systems. The Green Energy Hall’s rectangular shape and facade work together to maximize natural ventilation. The earthenware shutters on the exterior provide shade, regulating light and temperature within. The facade itself is a double-skin marvel. An inner layer of glazed cells provides insulation and waterproofing. The outer layer of earthenware shutters controls sunlight. This design minimizes the need for artificial climate control. The Green Energy Hall’s HVAC system is a hybrid. A primary system combines with smaller, adaptable units. These smaller units can be adjusted based on the research conducted in different labs. The Green Energy Hall is more than just a building. It’s a beacon of sustainable design, demonstrating how innovative architecture can minimize environmental impact.
