Remembering its roots, Greater Zion Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. Founded in 1909 Greater Zion has served the Dallas community for over a century.

Greater Zion began with a vision to offer a place where everyone feels welcome. The church desires that everyone develops a personal relationship with God. It encourages living a well-balanced life.

In 1969 Rev Miller E Johnson Sr accepted God’s call. He led the congregation. A groundbreaking ceremony happened in April 1973. Services began that fall at 4751 Hopkins Ave. It was then called Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church. Under Rev Johnson’s leadership the church grew. It significantly impacted the community.

In July 1983 Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church became Greater Zion Baptist Church. This change reflected Rev Johnson’s vision. He believed God always wins.

Rev Johnson passed away in 1991. Mark A Johnson Sr the assistant pastor became the interim pastor. In July 1991 Mark A Johnson Sr was appointed senior pastor. He continues to serve Greater Zion Baptist Church.

Pastor M A Johnson Sr is a native Texan. He grew up in Dallas. He was nurtured in faith from a young age. He graduated from South Oak Cliff High School. He earned an Associate Degree in Computer Technology in 1981.

Pastor Johnson comes from a family of preachers. His grandfather Herman Johnson and his father Miller E Johnson inspired him. He was ordained by M E Johnson Sr in 1986 at Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church.

Pastor Johnson once said if you meet me and forget me you have lost nothing. But if you meet God and forget Him you have lost everything.
