Can a church have two birthdays? Greater Walters African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church can. This grand church, right here before us, celebrates two significant dates: its founding in 1875 and its rebirth in 1974. Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church holds the distinction of being the oldest A.M.E. Zion Church in Chicago. Its journey began on South Dearborn Street. The congregation thrived for years, nurturing a vibrant community. However, tragedy struck in 1894 when a devastating fire destroyed their church home. Rising from the ashes, a new structure was erected in 1904 at a different location on South Dearborn. This building served the faithful for seventy years, witnessing countless services, celebrations, and moments of solace. In 1972, a dynamic leader, Reverend George W. Walker, Sr., became the 23rd pastor. He would later ascend to the Bishopric. His vision guided the church to its current location on South Damen Street in 1974. This move marked a new chapter, a rebirth for Greater Walters African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Under Reverend Walker’s leadership, the church found its permanent home. Later, in 1988, Reverend Roy A. Holmes took the helm as the 24th pastor, continuing the church’s legacy of service and spiritual guidance. This church has not only survived trials but has thrived, becoming a beacon of faith and resilience. The Illinois House of Representatives even recognized Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church’s 125th anniversary in a formal resolution, commending its outstanding service to God and the people of Illinois. So, as you stand before Greater Walters African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, remember its two birthdays, two stories of resilience and faith. One marked by fire and rebirth, the other by vision and new beginnings.
