Greater Salem’s story is intertwined with the life of Mahalia Jackson. She was a gospel legend. Born in New Orleans in 1911, Mahalia’s voice would soon fill hearts around the world. In 1927, she moved to Chicago. Her talent was quickly recognized.
Mahalia Jackson joined Greater Salem. Her impromptu performance of “Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet, Gabriel” sealed her place. She then toured with the Johnson Gospel Singers.
In 1929, Mahalia Jackson met Thomas A. Dorsey. He was known as the Father of Gospel Music. For 14 years, they toured together. Dorsey’s “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” became her signature song.
Her recording of “Move On Up a Little Higher” in 1948 was a smash hit. It sold eight million copies. Mahalia Jackson’s fame skyrocketed. In 1950, she was the first gospel singer to perform at Carnegie Hall.

Greater Salem Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history beyond Mahalia Jackson. It was founded as Salem Baptist Church in 1911. The church moved several times. In 1926, it was renamed Greater Salem Missionary Baptist Church. The church has experienced splits and changes.
In July 1958, Greater Salem moved to its current location. Reverend Leon Jenkins, Sr. became pastor in 1954. He led the congregation until his death in 1989. His son, Leon Jenkins, Jr., took over in 1990.
Under Rev. Dr. Leon Jenkins, Jr., the church has continued to grow. In 2019, Ministers Georgia Archibald Little and Sheila Harmon became the first licensed female preachers in the church’s history. They were ordained in 2021.
