Did you know Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church began with just seven members in a home? This marked the start of a journey filled with faith and community spirit. Today we stand before a testament to their vision.

Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church has a rich history. It all began on March 24 1929. The first gathering took place in the home of Deacon and Mrs. Leroy E. Stevenson Sr. Their home was located at 11362 S. Morgan Street in Chicago.

The small group quickly grew. In 1929 they purchased their first building. It was located at 1037 West 112th Place. Rev. S.S. Wesley served as pastor for seven years. He guided the church until his passing.

Rev. O.C. Riggins then stepped up. He remodeled the church. In 1945 he too was called home. The church needed a new leader once more.

Benjamin H. Watts became the pastor in 1945. Under his guidance, a building fund was started in 1952. Deacons Arthur Johnson, Paul Abrams, Leroy Stevenson Sr. and Trustee Tom Reed initiated it. This fund remained untouched for many years.

In 1963 Pastor Watts passed away. Rev. F.L. Johnson took over. He only served for a year. However, he established the Usher Board.

Rev. Hollis Lewis Sr. was called in 1964. The church prospered under his leadership. He installed a new heating plant. Siding was added to the building. Inspired, he encouraged the construction of a new church. Mother Mamie G. Rowland became treasurer. She worked tirelessly until she passed away at 97.

In 1983 George Rowland and Polytech Construction Company began work. They laid the foundation at 1157 West 115th Street. Despite many challenges, the new Greater Pleasant Green M.B. Church opened in 1987.

Rev. James L. Porter Sr. became pastor in 1997. He made cosmetic changes. The roof was renovated and a handicap ramp installed. The Fellowship Hall and kitchen were remodeled. A new sound system was added.

In 2012 Rev. Joseph M. Coney was called. A stairlift was installed. Pews were reupholstered. New flooring was added. The church partnered with American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago and Agape Ministries-CRU.

Greater Pleasant Green Baptist Church stands as a symbol. It is a testament to faith. It embodies community. It shows perseverance. It is a living legacy for future generations. It reminds us of the power of unity and devotion.
