Sister Dorothy Martin Shell’s legacy lives on. She’s one of the few remaining founders of Greater New Light Baptist Church. This incredible church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Right here on this very spot seventy-three years ago a dream began. Twenty-five dedicated souls gathered in a Los Angeles home. They shared a vision. They wanted to establish a new church. Their first meeting was in December 1951. Rev J D Trahan Rev J O Barnett and Sister Gibbs led the way. They formalized the church’s organization. The early days were humble. Services were initially held in a storefront. The congregation quickly found a new home. It was a garage behind their present location. The church’s name evolved. It began as Saint Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church. The name changed to The New Light Baptist Church. It finally became Greater New Light Baptist Church. This was necessary to avoid duplication. Another church in the city already had the same name. The members held numerous fundraisers. They raised enough money to purchase the land. They built their permanent structure. The groundbreaking ceremony happened in October 1952. By September 1953 the new church was ready for dedication. One hundred and thirty-five members were enrolled. The church grew remarkably under Rev Townsend’s leadership. Membership swelled to over 700. The number of deacons increased. So did the ushers and choir members. Rev Walter Washington then led Greater New Light Church. His tenure saw significant additions and improvements to the church. Modern conveniences and high-tech items were added. After serving forty-nine years Pastor Washington retired. Dr Patrick D Ross took over in August 2008. He continues the church’s mission. He preaches and teaches God’s word. He strives to save souls. Greater New Light Baptist Church continues to grow. It’s a symbol of unwavering faith. It’s a beacon of hope in the community. It’s a living legacy. A testament to the enduring power of faith and community. A remarkable story etched into the very foundation of this special place.
