Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, founded in 1954, was the result of a community’s yearning for spiritual guidance. It began as a small gathering in a home on Highway 3. The church grew rapidly fuelled by the spirit-filled services led by Rev. N.J. Wilson. This momentum led to the purchase of two lots and a tent was used to hold the congregation while the construction of the church building began.
The late Rev. Lewis Maxey played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the physical building. Along with him were the first deacons: Sherman Gentry, Dave Ray, W.H. Kittling, and C. Brockett. The church was completed in 1956, when it became known as Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
