Founded in 1928 Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. Five individuals met at the Lynch School. They established this vital Austin church. Rev J C Mack Sr was the first pastor. Growth blossomed after a 1929 revival. Sadly a 1932 storm destroyed the Lynch School. Undeterred the congregation built a new church in 1933. Rev S L Farris then became pastor. He oversaw a renaming to Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church. The church joined the Southern District Association and the American Baptist State Convention of Texas. Rev C E Williams followed. He led for nine years. Tragically he passed away in 1960. Rev A L McBeth brought a new vision. He oversaw the construction of a new edifice in 1963. His legacy continued with Rev H L Mackey. Mackey added brick to the church. He laid a cornerstone with the help of Brazoria Masonic Lodge #104. Rev W Alford then led. He expanded the sanctuary. He added office space and remodeled the cafeteria. Rev Adrian S Johnson arrived in 1989. He focused on youth and senior ministries. He built a multi-ministry building. This was dedicated in memory of Deacon Sherman Simple Sr. Elder Roland K Hendricks took over in 2005. His vision was “Impacting The Total You”. He oversaw the construction of a new sanctuary. This opened in 2010. In 2017 an event center was added. Today Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church continues to thrive. It serves its community with dedication and faith. This remarkable Austin church embodies resilience and spiritual growth. It continues to inspire and serve generations.
