“A church born in a home?” you might ask. Yes, the Greater Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church has humble beginnings. It all started in 1961 in the home of the late Rev. Earnest Carter. Imagine, in a cozy living room, filled with the spirit of faith, the seeds of this church were sown. Prayer meetings and Bible classes echoed with Rev. Carter’s vision. He envisioned a formal church, a beacon of hope, and named it Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The early congregation was small but mighty. Three deacons, a choir director, and one soul ready for baptism marked the beginning of their journey. But life had other plans for Rev. Carter, leading him to another city. The congregation found a new leader in Rev. Johnny Jones, with Rev. Samuel C. Brown as his assistant. When Rev. Jones passed away in 1967, Rev. Brown stepped into the role of pastor. His motto, taken from Romans 1:14, resonated with the growing congregation: “I am a debtor both to the wise and to the unwise. So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you.” The Greater Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church thrived under Rev. Brown’s leadership. Their numbers swelled, their faith deepened, and in 1985, they dedicated their new church building, a testament to their growing congregation. Years later, they expanded again, adding a fellowship hall, a sanctuary, and a special space just for children. In 2005, as if to crown their journey, they rededicated the church as the Greater Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, a name that reflects their expanded mission and the countless lives they touch. Today, the church stands as a beacon of faith, a legacy built on humble beginnings, visionary leadership, and an unwavering commitment to God’s teachings.
