How did seven people shape the destiny of a community? Right here, you’re standing in front of the Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. It’s a place where faith has flourished for almost a century. The Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church’s story begins not in a grand hall, but in a humble gathering. In 1972, seven individuals, driven by their faith, came together at the New Christian Union Baptist Church. These seven charter members, Rev. Roosevelt Lewis, Julia Macintosh, Henry & Lee-Dora Dabney, Juanita Lewis, James Ola Tillis, and James Kimber, dared to dream of a new spiritual home. Their vision was clear, their purpose strong, and their dedication unwavering. They quickly outgrew their first location on S. Cottage Grove and, fueled by donations and the soulful voices of the United Faith Choir, marched into their new home on E. 83rd Street in 1973. But the journey of the Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, much like the journeys of faith it has witnessed, has been marked by both triumph and tribulation. The church endured a split, a testament to the complexities of faith and community. Yet, through it all, the Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church has remained a beacon of hope, a testament to the enduring power of faith. The church has seen renovations, expansions, and the echoes of countless sermons, each contributing to the rich tapestry of its history. Today, the Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, a symbol of resilience, and a vibrant hub for the community.
