Did you know Greater Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church started in 1952? Five devoted members from Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church along with twenty-five from Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church joined forces. They created Greater Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Minister AM Jones became its first pastor. The church’s early years were marked by several moves to accommodate its growing congregation. They relocated to 2722 Thomas Street then 2838 Thomas Street. Membership reached seventy-five.

Minister Jones stepped down in 1954. Minister Henry Williams took over. Under his leadership the church experienced significant growth. They moved again to 629 North Vandeventer and later to 5514 Easton Avenue. Various groups and auxiliaries were formed enriching the church’s activities.

The church’s continued expansion necessitated a new building. Property at 1524-26 Belt Avenue was purchased. Incorporation papers were filed in 1957. Construction began in 1959. By March 1960 the new building was ready. Pastor Williams and his 250 members moved into their beautiful new church. A month-long celebration followed.

Pastor Williams’ pastorate concluded in 1967. Minister R James Glasco assumed leadership. He oversaw further growth and expansion. A Christian Education program was developed. A new wing containing offices classrooms a kitchen and a multipurpose area was completed in 1985. More property was acquired. The Educational Wing was dedicated to God.

Following Pastor Glasco’s passing in 1986 Minister Willie Harris took the reins. A debt liquidation fund was established. Ministries providing hot lunches food baskets and clothing were added. Minister Harris served four years. Minister Steve Wooten then became pastor in 1991.

Pastor Wooten’s leadership continued the church’s growth. Two vans were purchased for transportation. New musical instruments were acquired. The food and clothing distribution program was revised. A Wednesday evening fellowship meal was started. More parking was secured. The kitchen was renovated. The church’s commitment to the community remains strong. Its continued growth and service show its enduring faith. Greater Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to perseverance. It is a vital part of the Chicago community.
