In 1908, a small group of believers, led by Reverend Benjamin J. Holcomb and his brothers, laid the foundation for what would become the Greater Canaan Baptist Church. Their initial gathering place was a modest property on Belfield Avenue and Haines Street. Greater Canaan Baptist Church thrived in this location for 64 years, witnessing spiritual and numerical growth under Reverend Holcomb’s guidance. The church’s journey continued with a succession of devoted pastors. Reverend B.H. Moore took the helm in 1925, followed by Reverend Gus Roman, who served two separate terms, first in 1967 and again in 1992. Reverend Roman’s leadership marked a period of significant expansion for Greater Canaan Baptist Church, impacting membership, outreach initiatives, and the church’s overall influence. Reverend Manuel L. Dillingham led the congregation from 1982 to 1993, further strengthening its mission and community involvement. Under his tenure, Greater Canaan Baptist Church acquired a building on School House Lane dedicated to community service. Reverend Roman returned in 1993, enriching existing programs and emphasizing Christian education, missions, and civic responsibility. He retired in 2006, assuming the title of Pastor Emeritus. In 2006, Reverend Derick Brennan became pastor of Greater Canaan Baptist Church, focusing on the spiritual development of each member and carrying forward the church’s enduring legacy. The original building we see before us now wasn’t always the home of Greater Canaan Baptist Church. Constructed between 1904 and 1905, it first served as the Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist. Designed by renowned architect Solon S. Beman, the building showcases the Classical Revival style. Beman, known for his work on the Fine Arts Building and the Pullman community, also made significant contributions to early Christian Science architecture. This architectural gem, now a Chicago Landmark, stands as a testament to the Greater Canaan Baptist Church’s enduring presence and its commitment to its community.
