Did the glitz and glamour of Hollywood ever grace Singapore? It did, right here at Great World City. This isn’t just a shopping mall. It’s a phoenix, risen from the ashes of Singapore’s entertainment wonderland, the Great World Amusement Park. In the 1950s and 60s, this very spot pulsed with life, laughter, and the thrill of the Ghost Train. Imagine a place where families from all walks of life could afford a day of fun. Stalls overflowed with carnival games, hawkers sold everything from spiced snacks to traditional medicines. The air vibrated with the delighted screams from the Ferris wheel and roller coaster. Great World Amusement Park was the place to be. In 1958, the park reopened with a bang. Hollywood star Elizabeth Taylor herself graced the grand opening. She added a touch of Hollywood magic to the already dazzling Sky Theatre premiere. The park offered something for everyone. Four Shaw Brothers cinemas screened films in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. The Flamingo Night Club beckoned wealthy businessmen with nightly live performances. Delicious food, from street stalls to banquet halls, satisfied every craving. Great World even hosted international trade fairs and boxing matches. But times changed. Television, supermarkets, and pasar malams drew crowds away. In 1964, the amusement park closed its gates. But the story doesn’t end there. The spirit of Great World lived on. The cinemas and restaurants continued to operate until 1978. Then, in 1997, Great World City emerged, a modern incarnation of its predecessor. Today, Great World City continues the tradition of offering a diverse experience. High-end restaurants like Din Tai Fung and Bangkok Jam cater to sophisticated palates. Shoppers can find everything from designer clothes to groceries. The Golden Village Grand Cineplex, after a $2.5 million revamp, offers a state-of-the-art cinematic experience.
