Great Warley is more than just a village. It’s a living testament to Essex’s rich past. Its story unfolds in ancient manors grand houses and winding lanes. Its history intertwines with the rhythms of rural life and the echoes of significant historical events.
In 1086 the Domesday Book recorded Great Warley’s existence. It held a modest population of 36 inhabitants. Two manors Warley Abbess and Warley Franks dominated the area. These manors belonged to Barking Abbey until 1539. The village’s original centre clustered around these manors south of the present-day A127. Over time the village shifted to higher ground. The village green became its new heart.
Great Warley’s boundaries have changed dramatically over time. Once stretching seven miles long and three miles wide. Parts of it now belong to Cranham Warley and Little Warley. Its population today is around 450. It boasts a remarkable elevation the third highest point in Essex at 368 feet above sea level. Miles of footpaths and bridleways offer stunning views.
The village centre is a conservation area. Thirty-one listed buildings stand as silent witnesses to the passing years. Among them is Wallets a 15th-century house. Legend claims pilgrims on their way to Canterbury left their money there. Warley Place once housed Ellen Willmott the Victorian gardener. The house dating back to the early 18th century was demolished in 1939. The estate’s once magnificent gardens are now a nature reserve.
Goldings now the de Rougemont Manor Hotel was acquired by Evelyn Heseltine in 1875. It has expanded significantly since. Several village cottages date to the 1880s when they were part of the Goldings estate. Blake House once a corn merchant’s store later became the village tea room. The Forge in Great Warley Street housed a blacksmith’s business until recently. Seven new homes stand where it once stood the village’s first new homes in a long time.
Great Warley remains a farming community. Though without a shop it offers a pub two hotels two restaurants three small industrial areas and a cricket ground with breathtaking views across the Thames to Kent. Its active Conservation Society helps preserve its distinctive rural charm. The village continues to be a unique and captivating place. The stories woven into its fabric live on.
