Picture a sprawling landscape dotted with wild grape vines. This is the Grapevine we are exploring today. Grapevine Texas boasts a rich history dating back to 1844. It’s the oldest settlement in Tarrant County predating Texas’s union with the United States.
Imagine General Sam Houston and his fellow commissioners. They camped at Tah-Wah-Karro Creek also known as Grape Vine Springs in 1843. They met with leaders of ten Indian nations. A treaty of peace friendship and commerce was signed. This meeting opened the area for homesteaders. The resulting settlement was aptly named Grape Vine. The name honored the abundance of wild grapes growing in the area.
Grapevine’s early growth was slow. By 1890 it had around 800 residents. They enjoyed amenities like a newspaper a school cotton gins a post office and railroad service. The town’s name was officially shortened to Grapevine in 1914. The early 20th century saw Grapevine shift from cotton to cantaloupe farming. For decades Grapevine proudly called itself the “Cantaloupe Capital of the World”.
Sadly the town also experienced darker moments. On Easter Sunday 1934 Henry Methvin an associate of Bonnie and Clyde killed two police officers near Grapevine. A historical marker still stands at the site commemorating this tragic event.
World War II brought renewed growth. The opening of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in 1974 fueled massive development. Grapevine’s economy shifted from agriculture to commerce. Its location near the airport’s north entrance proved advantageous.
Today Grapevine is a thriving city. It combines its rich history with modern amenities. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad offers scenic rides. Numerous wineries attract wine enthusiasts. The historic downtown is a popular destination. Grapevine is home to major employers. These include the Gaylord Texan and Great Wolf Lodge.
