“Granslev Kirke, a village church frozen in time. But its story is one of constant change. Granslev Kirke is a Romanesque village church. Like many churches built in that era it has undergone several transformations. These changes have occurred throughout its history.

Let’s delve into the story of Granslev Kirke. It is located in Granslev village. This is about 16 km southwest of Randers. The church’s history is closely linked to the nearby Bidstrup Manor.

Extensive renovations began in the 1750s. Gerhard de Lichtenberg initiated them. He owned Bidstrup Manor. These renovations largely gave Granslev Kirke its current appearance.

Granslev Kirke stands as a testament to architectural evolution. It also shows the changing tastes of its patrons. The church’s foundation lies in the Romanesque period. Yet the Baroque era significantly reshaped it.

In the 1800s Granslev Sogn was associated with Houlbjerg Sogn. Both belonged to Houlbjerg Herred. This was in Viborg Amt. In 1970 Houlbjerg-Granslev merged into Langå Kommune. In 2007 this became part of Favrskov Kommune.

The landscape around Granslev Kirke has also evolved. The area features gently rolling terrain. Water erosion has divided it into sloping plateaus. The soil is primarily clay. Forests dot the steep hillsides. These include Vrangstrup bakker and Sønder- og Østervoer.

The church itself features a Romanesque chancel. It also has a nave made of granite. However a major renovation in 1766 dramatically altered it. H. H. de Lichtenberg transformed the space into a Rococo style.

A tower was added to the west. A porch was added to the south. A chapel was added on the north side of the nave. All additions were made of red brick. The tower boasts corner pilasters. It supports a timber spire with an onion dome.

The interior reflects the Rococo influence. The chancel has a high groin vault. The nave has a flat plastered ceiling. Groin vaults are in the tower room and chapel. The porch has a barrel vault.

Rococo ornaments adorn the nave walls. Most of the furnishings date from the Rococo renovation. The altarpiece dates from 1742. I. L. Ussing painted the altarpiece in 1849. It depicts Christ’s Transfiguration.

Paneling and side cabinets line the chancel wall. These are contemporary with the altarpiece. Heavy Renaissance candlesticks resemble those in Haurum and Sall. A late Gothic lay crucifix is present.

The Romanesque granite font features a double lion pattern. A wooden font border displays acanthus Baroque style. A south German dish from around 1575 shows pomegranates. A small crown-shaped Baroque canopy hangs above the font.

The Rococo pulpit dates from the renovation. So does the pew arrangement. The lord’s pew displays secular landscape paintings in blue. The organ loft and organ are also from this period.

In 1942 an investigation revealed a well-preserved early Renaissance organ. A large Renaissance chandelier hangs in the church. The tower houses a clockwork mechanism. An inscription indicates it was made in 1582. Fru Sidsel Oxe commissioned it.

The chapel was closed as a burial site in 1879. It features a naive 1700s painting. The painting shows Christ before Caiaphas. A worn gravestone in the churchyard depicts a woman. She is holding a cross.

Granslev Kirke stands not only as a religious site. It is also a historical landmark. It reflects centuries of architectural and artistic changes. Its story intertwines with the local families. It connects with the surrounding landscape.”
