“What if I told you this small park holds a secret about San Francisco’s past?” That’s what makes Grand View Park so special. This park, also called Turtle Hill, is a small elevated area in the Sunset District.

Grand View Park may be small. It is only about four acres. Yet, it is geologically and botanically important. The park offers stunning views. You can see downtown San Francisco. Golden Gate Park is visible too. The Pacific Ocean, the Marin headlands, and Sutro Tower are also in view.

The summit of Grand View Park reaches about 666 feet. It is part of the Franciscan Formation. This is the primary geologic feature of San Francisco. Here, it’s covered by a thin layer of sand.

Once, great dunes climbed over this hilltop. They moved from Ocean Beach toward downtown. This area is one of the last habitats for native plants. These include the endangered Franciscan wallflower and dune tansy. You can also find bush lupin and beach strawberry here. Monterey cypress trees crown the hill.

The city dedicated an acre at the top as park land in 1923. In 1952, the city sold the surrounding lots for unpaid taxes. Concerned neighbors wanted the city to expand the park. But park staff said the lots weren’t needed. The sale went ahead.

Development began in 1967. Environmental reporter Harold Gilliam urged people to protect the park. He feared construction would undermine it. Bowing to pressure, the city bought the lots in the mid-1970s. They paid much more than they had sold them for.

Gilliam envisioned protected natural areas. This vision has become a reality. Grand View Park is a reminder of San Francisco’s natural past.

Grand View Park has a small trail network. The Grandview Trail is only 0.2 miles long. It climbs to the top of the hill. Most of the climb is on wooden stairs. The trail around the hilltop is soft and sandy.

Winds carried sand from the shore to this hill for years. The windblown sand supply has been cut off by city development. Sand eroded from Grand View Park does not replenish itself. The park’s plants and animals depend on stopping erosion. Stay on the paths when visiting Grand View Park.

This hilltop park has views from downtown to Lake Merced. It features dune plants atop 140-million-year-old rock. This rock is called Franciscan chert. It formed when the region was part of the ancient sea floor.

Countless radiolaria combined with mineral dust. They formed layers of chert. These layers were later uplifted to land.

Grand View Park is more than just a park. It’s a journey through time. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience. It is a reminder of the importance of preservation. As you stand here, take in the view. Remember the story beneath your feet. Let’s protect Grand View Park for future generations.
