Grand Central Missionary Baptist Church

From six souls gathered in a humble home on Kellogg Street, a mighty river of faith would flow. This is the story of Grand Central Missionary Baptist Church. Grand Central Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t always at its current location. It began in January 1966 under the leadership of Reverend Andrew L. Bowman. He had previously pastored South Central Missionary Baptist Church in the Joppa community. The church’s first meetings were held in the home of Brother and Sister Don King with just six charter members. By September 1966, the burgeoning congregation had purchased its first building at 1207 Diceman Avenue. This became affectionately known as “the little church.” God’s blessings were evident as the church grew rapidly. The Diceman Street location soon became too small. After much prayer and fasting, Grand Central Missionary Baptist Church moved to its current location at 3002 S. Denley Drive in August 1971. The move coincided with several members from the former church at that location, Greater Olivette Missionary Baptist Church, joining the Grand Central family. Grand Central Missionary Baptist Church has seen several pastors guide its flock. Reverend Bowman departed in 1973 to lead Union Baptist Church in Denver. His successor, Reverend W.J. Atkins, oversaw a period of growth and spiritual development, with five members answering the call to ministry. Renovations in 1974 accommodated the expanding congregation and choir. The church’s first anniversary service was held in their remodeled sanctuary in October 1975. Despite the changes in leadership over the years, Grand Central Missionary Baptist Church remained a steadfast beacon of faith. Each pastor, from Reverend J.C. Adams to Reverend Bruce W. McCoy, left their mark. The church continued to grow spiritually, numerically, and financially. Even periods of transition, with ministry leaders guiding the church between pastors, brought new members and new opportunities for service. The church we see today is a testament to the faith and perseverance of its members. From those six original members meeting in a home to a thriving congregation at 3002 S. Denley Drive, Grand Central Missionary Baptist Church has truly experienced an amazing journey of faith.
