Five Seattle Grand Army of the Republic posts established the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in 1895. It sits on Capitol Hill just north of Lake View Cemetery. This quiet place holds the legacy of Union and Confederate soldiers. Their stories are etched in the headstones. Many traveled west seeking a new life after the Civil War.

The cemetery is more than just graves. It’s a testament to resilience and hope. It’s a place where soldiers from almost 25 states found their final rest. Imagine the journeys they undertook. The battles they fought. The lives they led.

The Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery initially flourished. The five GAR posts maintained it until 1922. Then they transferred ownership. The city of Seattle took over the land around the graves. The Stevens Post took responsibility for the graves themselves. They hired Lake View Cemetery for upkeep.

But the cemetery declined over time. Ownership confusion hampered maintenance. A failed WPA project further complicated matters. World War II brought the Coast Artillery onto the grounds. The cemetery suffered from neglect. In 1960 there was even an attempt to move the graves to Fort Lawton. This never happened.

Today the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery is a public park. The Friends of the GAR Cemetery Park work tirelessly to preserve it. They organize work parties and daily flag raisings. They replace headstones. They keep the memory of these brave soldiers alive.

Among the notable burials is Medal of Honor recipient Frank Bois. He earned this honor for his bravery aboard the USS Cincinnati during the Battle of Vicksburg. His story is one of many waiting to be discovered.

The Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery is a small but significant part of Seattle’s history. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the Civil War. The cemetery’s quiet dignity continues to resonate. It’s a fitting tribute to those who served. Remember their stories. Respect their sacrifice. Visit the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery.
