Jacarandas magically appear every March and April. Their blossoms remind us of a legacy. It’s the legacy of Tatsugoro Matsumoto. We’re here at Gran Jardinera Pascual. This park is near Avenida Félix Cuevas. It’s a green space in Del Valle.

Gran Jardinera Pascual is part of Parque Pascual Ortiz Rubio. The park is also called Jardín Pascual Ortiz Rubio. It is named after Pascual Ortiz Rubio. He was president of Mexico from 1930 to 1932.

Let’s talk about those jacarandas. President Pascual Ortiz Rubio wanted cherry trees. He asked Japan for them. He wanted to plant them along Mexico City’s avenues. This was to symbolize friendship.

Japan consulted Tatsugoro Matsumoto. Matsumoto was a Japanese emigrant. He had lived in Mexico for years. Matsumoto advised against cherry trees. He said Mexico City’s climate wasn’t right. Cherry trees need a big temperature change.

Matsumoto suggested jacarandas instead. He had brought them from Brazil. He knew they would thrive here. He was right. Today, jacarandas are seen as native trees. They bloom beautifully in spring.

Matsumoto was a landscape architect. He designed gardens for the elite. He even worked for President Porfirio Díaz. His son, Sanshiro, helped him. They started a large business.

The Matsumotos recommended jacarandas to President Álvaro Obregón. They planted them along the city’s avenues. The flowers last longer because there is less rain.

The Matsumotos opened a flower shop. It became very popular. They made arrangements for parties and weddings. They had close ties with Mexican presidents.

During World War II, Japanese communities faced persecution. The Matsumotos helped them. They sheltered over 900 immigrants. This was at their ranch south of Mexico City.

The Parque Pascual Ortiz Rubio was once abandoned. It was a sunken lot in the 1990s. In 1999, it was replanted. It has been a favorite park ever since.

This park is a perfect geometric garden. It’s a center of civic life. It’s a beloved park in Del Valle. Take a moment to appreciate this green space. Think of Tatsugoro Matsumoto’s legacy. His vision transformed Mexico City. Now, enjoy the Gran Jardinera Pascual.
