Fifty years ago a symbol of hope was planted. Right here before you stands the Gran Esfera. This isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a monument. A testament to the dreams of Coyoacán. It’s a story of urban renewal. A project designed to beautify the city.

The Gran Esfera wasn’t part of the 1968 Olympic games’ Ruta de la Amistad. Many believe it was. That’s a common misconception. The truth is richer. Fernando González Gortázar. This talented architect and sculptor created this masterpiece in 1973. He is mostly known for his work in Guadalajara and Jalisco. His work here though was commissioned by Coyoacán’s delegation.

Imagine the Gran Esfera as it was then. A brand new symbol of all things good. A sprig of wheat. The artist saw it as nourishment. A representation of a community’s harmony. It’s a poetic image. One used by writers throughout history. It speaks of hope and sustenance.

Sadly time and neglect took their toll. Traffic and vandalism damaged the Gran Esfera. Years of weather battered it. The once vibrant symbol of hope was fading. Then in 2018 something wonderful happened. After 50 years it was fully restored. The original vision returned. It stands again as a testament to resilience.

Today as you gaze upon the Gran Esfera remember its history. Remember the intention. Remember the rebirth. It’s more than just metal. It is a story. It is a symbol. It is a piece of Coyoacán’s soul. A testament to the enduring spirit of Mexico City.
