Before this elegant brick structure, there stood a humble timber-framed church. That church, the Grambker Kirche, was the heart of this community. Sadly, time took its toll. The old church, built in 1687, eventually succumbed to decay and was demolished in 1722. However, from its ruins rose a new beacon of faith. The Grambker Kirche that stands before you today, built in the Baroque style. Notice the influence of Reformed churches in its single-nave, transept design, reminiscent of St. Pauli in Bremen’s Neustadt. Look closely at the south side of the church. You’ll find a sundial, a silent witness to the passage of time. Originally, the church lacked a tower, relying on a small ridge turret. This structure, however, proved inadequate and was later removed. In 1864, a neo-Gothic west tower, designed by architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase, was erected. This tower, reaching a height of 27.2 meters, now defines the church’s silhouette. Look for the clock, positioned at a height of 16 meters, patiently marking time. The church’s interior holds stories too. A magnificent carved pulpit, dating back to 1632, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It was a gift from Bremen councilors Davemann and Hinrich von Aschen to the Burger Kirche, which was tragically destroyed in 1654. In 1680, it found a new home in the first Grambker Kirche. Take a moment to admire the intricate craftsmanship, the allegorical figures representing virtues, and the half-figures of Moses and John the Baptist. The octagonal baptismal font, a companion to the pulpit, has a tale of its own. Lost for a time, it resurfaced in 1928 and was restored to its rightful place. The Grambker Kirche, a blend of architectural styles and historical echoes, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community.
