Before you stands Graham Hill Elementary School a beacon of learning in Seattle’s Seward Park neighborhood. Graham Hill Elementary School wasn’t always here. Its story begins long before its 1961 brick building. In 1901 a small school called Brighton opened on this very spot. It was a simple one-room schoolhouse. It served students for only four years. Brighton then moved a few blocks away. The original building was used sporadically as an annex. It was even called Brighton Beach or Little Brighton. The old building was removed in 1943. The site became a public playfield.

Fast forward to the 1950s. Seattle’s population boomed. More schools were needed. In 1957 portable buildings went up on the old Brighton site. Graham Hill Elementary School started as an annex to Brighton. Each year a new grade level was added until it became a K-6 school.

By 1960 Graham Hill was big enough to be its own school. A new brick building was completed in 1961. It was named to honor Walter Graham. Graham settled this area in the 1850s. The name also referenced the school’s hilltop location. It overlooks Lake Washington and the Rainier Valley.

Graham Hill Elementary School wasn’t just about academics. In 1991 a Montessori program began. It was well-liked but not available to all students. This caused some division. The program ended by 2019. Today Graham Hill has a unified curriculum for all grades K-5.

In 2004 a $4.8 million expansion added a new wing. The new wing contained more classrooms and a larger library. This expansion was much needed. It replaced older portable buildings. The school is now 55037 square feet. It sits on a 4.51-acre site with 22 classrooms.

Today Graham Hill Elementary School remains a unique Seattle institution. It is one of only two schools in its district not considered racially imbalanced. Its diverse student body reflects the neighborhood’s makeup. The school continues to thrive. It serves the community’s children. It provides them with a quality education. The Graham Hill Elementary School stands as a testament to Seattle’s history. It is a symbol of its commitment to education. It is a place where learning and community intertwine. It is a place where futures are shaped.
