Amidst the energetic hum of Jakarta rises Graha Dharma Sukha. This isn’t just any building. It’s a beacon of Buddhist devotion, a place where the whispers of ancient teachings intertwine with the rhythms of modern life. Graha Dharma Sukha stands as a testament to the vision of Mr. Siwie Honoris. In the early 1990s, he recognized the need for a Buddhist sanctuary in Pluit. He envisioned a place where the growing Buddhist community could gather, learn, and connect. Along with several other key figures, he transformed a house on Jalan Pluit Permai VIII into the first incarnation of Vihara Pluit Dharma Sukha. The official inauguration took place during the sacred Waisak celebration in May 1992, marking a new chapter for Buddhism in the area. The name “Dharma Sukha,” meaning “happiness in Dharma”, was bestowed upon the Vihara by Bhante Vin Mahathera. From its humble beginnings, Graha Dharma Sukha has always strived to be inclusive. Its doors are open to Buddhists of all traditions, from Theravada to Mahayana and Tantrayana. This is reflected in the diverse array of speakers invited to share their wisdom, fostering a vibrant tapestry of Buddhist thought. The original Vihara quickly became a beloved spiritual home. However, as the community grew, the need for a larger space became evident. In 2007, Graha Dharma Sukha moved to its current location on Jalan Pluit Permai I. This five-story building provides ample space for worship, learning, and community gatherings. The main halls can accommodate hundreds of worshippers, ensuring that everyone has a place to connect with their faith. Graha Dharma Sukha offers a unique blend of traditional and modern elements. While grounded in ancient Buddhist principles, it also embraces modern comforts. Unlike traditional temples, worshippers here sit on chairs rather than on the floor. Music also plays a central role in the services, with an organ accompanying the Buddhist hymns. This inclusive and modern approach has helped Graha Dharma Sukha attract a diverse congregation, welcoming people from all walks of life, regardless of their background or social status. As you stand before Graha Dharma Sukha, take a moment to appreciate the journey it represents. From a simple house to a magnificent five-story building, it embodies the enduring spirit of Buddhism in Jakarta.
