Can you imagine a church being the tallest building in Dallas? That’s exactly what Grace United Methodist Church was when it was constructed in 1903. Grace United Methodist Church, standing tall on Junius Street, was designed by leading St. Louis church architect W.A. Cann. He chose Gothic Revival architecture, giving the church its iconic spire and tower. But the church wasn’t just a symbol of faith. It was a beacon of hope and a place of healing for the community. The church was formed from the merger of two churches, Floyd Street Methodist Church and Haskell Avenue Methodist Church, both founded in the late 1800s to serve the city’s elite. The church has always adapted to the changing needs of the neighborhood. It’s the home of the Open Door Preschool, preparing non-English speaking students for public school. The church also houses a neo-monastic community. This group helps people experiencing housing insecurity. It is hard to imagine that a church, standing tall and proud on Junius Street, is the tallest church in the city. But its legacy lives on not only in its architecture but in its dedication to serving others.
