Built in 1911 Grace Evangelical Free Church stands proudly in Logan Square. It’s a testament to faith and community. A group of eight people founded Grace Evangelical Church back in 1904. They built a small chapel. This was quickly outgrown. A larger church was built just five years later.
The architect Charles F Sorensen designed the impressive structure. The building cost $20000. He used buff-colored brick. This was unusual for churches of that time. He also chose not to include a tower or steeple. The facade is streamlined. This was very modern for 1909. The arches are smoother than the pointed Gothic arches across the street.
The building’s exterior is simple yet elegant. Subtle details enhance its beauty. Carved stone medallions add a touch of artistry. From Kimball Avenue you can see the church’s unique L shape. This contrasts with the traditional T shape of many churches. The main sanctuary is elevated. This aided acoustics. It allowed ministers to speak in normal tones instead of shouting.
In 1926 a Sunday School Annex was added. The annex features arches with Gothic and Moorish influences. It houses classrooms offices and a gymnasium. The church’s interior is equally impressive. The main sanctuary dominates. A full kitchen fellowship hall and a small stage are in the basement.
By 1914 Grace Church was the largest Evangelical congregation in the city. It merged with the United Brethren in 1946. It became Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church. This included another Logan Square church. Midcentury demographic changes affected the congregation. Grace Church combined with a church across the street. This formed Grace United Methodist Church in 1968.
Grace Church has served as a community hub. It’s hosted elections operatic programs and zoning meetings. It also provided social services. Mounting maintenance costs forced the congregation to consider changes. Logan Square Preservation helped secure funding. This covered masonry work and other repairs. The church is exploring options for future use. One possibility is a field house for Unity Park. Grace Evangelical Free Church remains a significant part of Logan Square’s history and community.
