In the 17th century, Dresden was strictly Protestant. Catholic cemeteries were forbidden. A political marriage changed this. August the Strong’s son married Maria Josepha. She was an Austrian Habsburg princess. As a devout Catholic, she secured a burial ground for her Catholic court members in the marriage contract of April 1719. August the Strong agreed. He had converted to Catholicism in 1697 to gain the Polish crown.
However, August the Strong placed strict conditions. Only court members could be buried there. A chapel and family tombs were not allowed. Burials had to be silent with no prayers at the grave. This contradicted Catholic burial customs.
The first burial took place in February 1724. More followed quickly. After August the Strong’s death in 1733, his son granted Catholics more rights. From September 1738, the cemetery was open to all Catholics. The original area of 5600 square meters was soon insufficient. Expansions occurred in 1740 and 1742. A new wall and a cemetery master’s house were added. A third expansion followed a century later in 1842. This included the construction of a small chapel. Since 1914, it has housed Balthasar Permoser’s crucifixion group. Bishop Franz Lorenz Mauermann inaugurated it. He significantly contributed to the third expansion. He is buried behind the chapel, overlooking the expanded area.
Further expansion became impossible. In 1874, the Neue Katholische Friedhof was built about a kilometer away.
