A century’s worth of stories whispers from the walls of GPIB Marturia. Right here in Jakarta’s vibrant heart stands this remarkable church. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. GPIB Marturia wasn’t always known by that name. It began in 1927. Its original name was the Protestantsche Kerk in Nederlands Indie. It served the Dutch and Indonesian Christian communities. Initially it was a small congregation. It met in a plantation called Kolonie de Giesting. Slowly funds were raised. After eight years enough money had been gathered. Eleven thousand one hundred and twenty-one guilders and thirty cents were collected. This allowed the church building to be fully constructed. The church was finally consecrated on October 16 1938. Its bell rang out proclaiming the momentous occasion. Sadly that bell was lost during the Japanese occupation.

The church’s role shifted over time. It became a Japanese army barracks during World War II. Later it served as a headquarters for Indonesian independence fighters. It even functioned as a central hub for churches in Bandarlampung. This was before they had their own permanent buildings. In 1988 the church was renamed GPIB Marturia. Marturia means testimony. It reflects the church’s mission to spread the Gospel. The name is deeply significant.

Over the years GPIB Marturia has undergone renovations. These were done without altering its original design. The church boasts a unique feature. A stunning mosaic graces its interior. This mosaic depicting the four Gospels is exceptionally rare. It’s believed only one other similar mosaic exists. This other mosaic is located in the Domkerk Utrecht in the Netherlands. This mosaic was created by Robert Deppe. He was inspired by Prof R N Roland Hoist. The mosaic was once illuminated by natural sunlight. Now nearby buildings block the light.

GPIB Marturia is more than a place of worship. It’s a living museum. It stands as a silent witness to Jakarta’s rich history. Visitors often come to learn about its past. They explore its unique architecture. They marvel at its precious mosaic. The church is a cherished landmark. It’s a place of both spiritual and historical significance. It stands proudly. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith. GPIB Marturia continues its mission. It serves as a beacon of hope. It also serves as a reminder of Jakarta’s fascinating past.
