Nestled amidst the bustling cityscape of Jakarta, GPIB Jemaat Shalom stands as a beacon of faith. GPIB Jemaat Shalom is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Protestant community in Western Indonesia. The church’s history is deeply intertwined with the broader narrative of GPIB, the Gereja Protestan di Indonesia bagian Barat. This translates to the Protestant Church in Western Indonesia.

GPIB itself emerged from the Indische Kerk, tracing its roots back to the Protestant Reformation. The theology of GPIB Jemaat Shalom, like other GPIB churches, draws heavily from the teachings of John Calvin. He was a French reformer who later led the church in Geneva. This theological foundation shaped the church’s identity and its role within the Indonesian Christian community. GPIB was officially established on October 31, 1948, originally under the name De Protestantse Kerk in Westelijk Indonesie.

The church’s early days were marked by a strong organizational structure. The first Synod Assembly of De Protestantse Kerk in Westelijk Indonesie included influential figures like Ds. J.A. de Klerk as Chairman. Other key members shaped the direction of the church in its formative years. Upon its formation, GPIB comprised seven Klasis, now known as Mupel or Musyawarah Pelayanan. These encompassed 53 congregations spread across various regions. These included Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Sumatra, Bangka & Riau, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.

GPIB Jemaat Shalom is part of a larger network of faith. It is a member of GPI (Gereja Protestan Indonesia), the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI), the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA), the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC), and the World Council of Churches (WCC). This interconnectedness speaks to the church’s commitment to ecumenism and global Christian fellowship. The church continues to serve as a vital center for worship, fellowship, and community outreach. It embodies the spirit of Shalom, offering a place of peace and spiritual nourishment amidst the vibrant energy of Jakarta.
