“What if a church could rise from the spirit of reform itself?” That question embodies the story of GPIB Jemaat Martin Luther. This church stands as a testament to faith and community in Jakarta Timur.

GPIB Jemaat Martin Luther began with a vision. Its story intertwines with the spirit of the Reformation. The church’s foundation stone was laid on October 31 1965. This date intentionally coincided with Reformation Day.

Both members and non-members passionately supported the church’s construction. Mr. Kolonel Montolalu significantly contributed wood. He was a supervisor at Hotel Borobudur then. Mr. Ferdinand also played a vital role transporting wood.

By the end of 1965 the building was complete. Mr. Daniel Sahusilawane suggested the name Martin Luther. The community agreed. It became a bajem under GPIB Eben Haezer.

On January 1 1966, Pdt. Kainama officially inaugurated it. He represented the Synod Council of GPIB. The congregation decided that October 31 would mark GPIB Martin Luther’s anniversary.

For about 11 years, GPIB Martin Luther served as a bajem. On December 4 1977, the Synod Council of GPIB recognized it as a fully established congregation. Pdt B. Simauw and Pdt. J. M. Djarkasi signed the decree.

Years later, Pdt. Drs. Rudy Immanuel Ririhena led an effort to compile the church’s history. He was the Head of the Church Council from 2016 to 2020.

The team gathered historical sources. They conducted a webinar on November 28 2020. The webinar was titled “Exploring the History of GPIB Martin Luther”. Diaken Ayub D. P. Junus and Diaken Michael E. Sendow played key roles.

Diaken Winston Sahusilawane and Bpk. Samuel Sumaiku shared their experiences. They were witnesses to the church’s early days. Former KMJ pastors also provided valuable insights.

These efforts culminated in a book. It is titled “BUNGA RAMPAI SEJARAH GPIB MARTIN LUTHER”. It captures the rich history of GPIB Jemaat Martin Luther.

Today, GPIB Jemaat Martin Luther continues to serve. Regular Sunday services are held at 09:00 and 18:00 WIB. The church actively uses technology. The 09:00 service is streamed live on YouTube.

GPIB Jemaat Martin Luther’s mission is clear. It strives to build synergy between the church and the community. It aims to embody God’s love for all creation. The church optimizes intergenerational synergy. It develops missionary leadership. It embraces the digital culture.

The story of GPIB Jemaat Martin Luther is one of faith, community and dedication. From its humble beginnings to its present-day mission. The church remains a beacon of hope and service in Jakarta Timur. It welcomes all to share in its journey. It is a living testament to the enduring power of faith.
