The church is a part of the Gereja Protestan di Indonesia bagian Barat. This translates to the Protestant Church in Western Indonesia.
GPIB embraces the teachings of John Calvin. Calvin was a key figure in the Protestant Reformation. He later led the church in Geneva. The GPIB believes that God saves the universe through Jesus Christ. This salvation continues through the Holy Spirit.
The GPIB adheres to the principles of Sola Fide. It also follows Sola Gratia and Sola Scriptura. These translate to faith alone grace alone and scripture alone. The church embraces the Apostles Creed. It accepts the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. The GPIB also recognizes the Athanasian Creed.
The GPIB’s understanding of faith comes from God’s Word. It also comes from church tradition and ecumenical creeds. This understanding addresses current challenges. It considers the needs of Indonesian society.
GPIB uses a Presbyterial Sinodal system. This system involves pastors elders and deacons. All members of the GPIB congregation participate. The GPIB is a union of congregations. Some existed when the GPIB was founded. Others were established later. Some grew from ministry and outreach.
GPIB congregations exist throughout Indonesia. They are outside the areas served by GMIM GPM and GMIT. The GPIB sends missionaries abroad. This is done through agreements with partner churches.
The GPIB is active in Indonesian society. It is present in 26 provinces. These provinces include Sumatra Java and Bali. They also include Nusa Tenggara Barat Kalimantan and Sulawesi Selatan. This aligns with the GPIB’s founding mission.
The history of the GPIB traces back to 1605. It began with the formation of De Protestantse Kerk. This church was in Nederlands Indie Ambon Maluku. In 1619 the headquarters moved to Batavia. This was due to the Governor-General’s relocation.
De Protestantse Kerk inherited congregations from the Portuguese. Its ministry extended to various regions. These included Maluku Minahasa and the Lesser Sunda Islands. Java and Sumatra were also included.
The growing ministry of De Protestantse Kerk faced challenges. In 1927 they agreed to maintain church unity. Regions with unique needs gained more autonomy.
A synod in 1933 granted Minahasa Maluku and Timor greater independence. In 1934 the GMIM became the first independent church. The GPM followed in 1935. After World War II the GMIT was established in 1947.
Another synod decided to form a fourth independent church. This church would serve western Indonesia. On October 31 1948 the De Protestantse Kerk in Westelijk Indonesie was created. This happened at Willems Kerk now Gereja Immanuel Jakarta.
Today the GPIB has 322 congregations. They are spread across Indonesia. The Persidangan Sinode is the highest leadership body. It convenes every five years. It elects the Majelis Sinode and Badan Pemeriksa Perbendaharaan Gereja. They set church policies and budgets.
The GPIB also holds annual events. These include the Konven Pendeta and Persidangan Sinode Tahunan. The Konven Pendeta provides training and fellowship. The Persidangan Sinode Tahunan evaluates programs and sets future plans.
The Majelis Sinode leads the GPIB. Majelis Jemaat leads at the local level. Pastors elders and deacons each have specific roles. Pastors focus on word and sacraments. Elders focus on care and order. Deacons focus on social and compassionate service.
GPIB provides various ministries. These include Pelkat PA for children. There is also Pelkat PT for youth and Pelkat GP for young adults. Pelkat PKP serves women. Pelkat PKB serves men. Pelkat PKLU serves senior adults.
The GPIB also operates several departments. These cover theology and ministry. They address church and society issues. The departments work on human resources and communications. They also focus on economic development.
The GPIB’s vision is to promote peace. Its motto comes from Luke 13:29. It envisions people coming from all directions to God’s Kingdom. The GPIB strives to be a blessing. It seeks to build a missionary community. This community will contribute to church society and Indonesia.
