“Did you know there’s an art gallery in Australasia so large, it could house a small country’s artistic dreams?” I ask, gesturing dramatically towards the Gow Langsford Gallery Onehunga. The Gow Langsford Gallery Onehunga stands before us, a testament to art’s transformative power. Gow Langsford Gallery is more than just a building. It’s a living, breathing entity, pulsating with the creative energy of artists from New Zealand and beyond. The gallery opened its doors in Onehunga in early 2024. Gow Langsford has been a cornerstone of New Zealand’s art scene for over 35 years. This new flagship location in Onehunga represents a significant expansion. The building itself has a fascinating history. Originally commissioned in 1958 by Helena Rubinstein, the Polish businesswoman, philanthropist, and art patron, it has been meticulously refurbished. Gow Langsford retained its historical charm while modernizing the space. This creates a beautiful blend of old and new. Now, it’s one of the largest commercial art spaces in Australasia. It houses premium gallery spaces, studios for up-and-coming artists, and an extensive visual arts library. Inside, you’ll find works by more than thirty established artists. Many of these artists are among New Zealand’s best, alongside leading international artists. Gow Langsford has presented over 500 exhibitions, shaping the careers of many prominent New Zealand artists. The inaugural exhibition, “This Must be the Place,” explored the history and experiences of Aotearoa and Oceania. It’s a powerful statement about the gallery’s commitment to showcasing diverse and thought-provoking art. The Gow Langsford Gallery Onehunga continues this legacy. It provides a vibrant hub for art enthusiasts, collectors, and artists.
