Nestled amidst the sprawling city of Leipzig, lies the quaint village of Gottscheina. It’s a hidden gem, tucked away in the northeastern corner of the city, in the district of Seehausen. Gottscheina’s story begins in the 8th century, a time of Slavic settlements. Its very name, derived from the old Slavic word “hoti” or “choti”, meaning “desire” or “will”, speaks to its allure as a desirable place to settle. The village’s unique circular layout, a “Rundling”, further points to its Slavic origins. Gottscheina remained relatively isolated, with only one access road. This isolation likely contributed to its preservation as a historic site. Imagine stepping back in time as you wander through Gottscheina. Many of the buildings you see today, primarily three and four-sided farmsteads, still retain their traditional Lehm construction. The oldest, the farmhouse of Hof Nr. 10, built in 1768, showcases a rare two-story plastered clay-walled structure. The walls ingeniously taper from 1.3 meters on the ground floor to 0.6 meters on the upper floor. Remnants of the original clay wall that once encircled the entire village still stand. Gottscheina’s history is deeply intertwined with the University of Leipzig. In 1438, the village, along with Hohenheida and Merkwitz, was gifted to the university by the Saxon electors Friedrich and Wilhelm. These villages became known as the “Old University Villages”. Under the university’s stewardship, Gottscheina, then known as “Goczschin”, experienced a period of relative stability. Around 1450, the three villages shared a single pastor. This pastor, the first employed by the university, relied on the farmers to cultivate his fields. Gottscheina’s small church, with its distinctive tower, is a testament to the village’s resilience. First mentioned in 1637, the church served as a makeshift stable for Swedish soldiers during the Thirty Years’ War. Despite multiple destructions, it was consistently rebuilt. The prominent tower, a gift from Leipzig manufacturer Karl Krause, was added in 1892. In 1969, when the tower faced demolition due to disrepair, the villagers rallied together, raising funds and contributing their own labor to save it. Gottscheina also played a role in the modern history of Leipzig. The renowned journalist Udo Reiter, co-founder of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), resided in the former village school from 1994 until his passing in 2014. Today, Gottscheina stands as a protected historical site. A testament to its rich past and the enduring spirit of its community, Gottscheina continues to charm visitors with its unique character and timeless beauty.
